TEAM ROLES

Roles define the set of behaviors appropriate to specific positions within a group. These functional roles include three categories of behaviors: task, relationship, and self-oriented.

TASK FUNCTIONS: Decision-making activities and task accomplishment

Initiator

Recommends new ideas or procedures to solve problems

Information Seeker

Requests facts or information from others

Information Giver

Offers pertinent facts or information

Opinion Seeker

Solicits views, feelings, and attitudes of others

Opinion Giver

Provides suggestions, personal views, feelings and attitudes

Elaborator

Gives additional information or examples

Coordinator

Points out relevance of ideas to overall issue

Evaluator

Measures quality of methods, logic or facts

Recorder

Takes notes and maintains records

RELATIONSHIP FUNCTIONS: Group-centered activities, feelings, and viewpoints

Encourager

Provides warmth and support to invite participation

Harmonizer

Mediates conflicts and reduces tension

Compromiser

Proposes alternatives to maintain group unity

Gatekeeper

Opens communication channels to equalize participation

Follower

Accepts ideas and serves as audience for group

Reflector

Gives feedback on group dynamics/process

SELF-ORIENTED FUNCTIONS: Personal needs and goals that hinder group progress

Blocker

Resists through negativity, stubbornness, and rejection

Avoider

Remains apart from others through passive resistance

Dominator

Asserts control through manipulation, interruption, attention

Recognition Seeker

Calls attention to self by boasting, bragging, superiority

 

Close
